How to match a color
Add a photo
Use Change photo to open any picture, or type a hex, RGB or DMC code instead.
Tap a spot
Click or tap the color you want. The matcher reads a small area, so noise in the photo doesn't throw it off.
Pick a thread
The best match comes first. A difference under 3 is very hard to see with the naked eye.
Color matching questions
How does the DMC color matcher work?
It compares your color with all 489 DMC floss colors using CIEDE2000, a formula that measures color difference the way the human eye sees it. The threads with the smallest difference come first.
What do the difference numbers mean?
Below 3 is very close: most people can't tell the colors apart. Between 3 and 6 is close, fine for most patterns. Above 6 the difference is easy to see, so check the thread in daylight.
Can I find colors close to a DMC thread?
Yes. Type a DMC number, like 321, or tap any color in the DMC color chart. You get the nearest other DMC shades, handy when a thread is sold out.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is read inside your browser and never leaves your device.
